If the world were more like Mozilla

Posted in: General on October 26th, 2005

Why can’t the world work the way Mozilla Firebox does? As some one that deals with the internet on a regular basis I like things that make it easy. And as some one who makes things for the internet I appreciate people doing things the proper way. Now I’m talking about coding and the differences between Microsoft and the rest of the free world.

I think it is key for designers to have standards, and there are rules and standards to insure that things look and act properly, so why is it that in order to have any sort of continuity you have to use hacks, tricks, and other sorts of voodoo to get that across to the end user. What is the point of standards when the most commonly used browser is the one that is the hardest to make things work properly on?

Now I’m going to use an analogy here, when you buy your brand new bathtub it’s probably going to come with a complement plug for your drain, now when you have your bath and you see that hey, the water is staying the plug must work, but is it the best plug I can get? Probably not it’s stuck in the bottom; you don’t have any of these cool floating anchors to make it easy to find it amidst the suds. So you go our and get a new one that suits you. Now when you get your brand new computer you fire it up and go on the internet with your stock version of internet explorer and you say “cool the internet? but for the end use that is all there is to it.

It’s hard to take the majority and tell them that what they know and use so well is butchering websites and making designers life’s stressful. People need to go out and get there new drain plug, they need to go get Mozilla and help stop the chaos.
